What's Up on the Ward at CAMTA?
Wednesday, for photographer?? Lilley was the challenge of capturing the activity on the second floor of the Tierra Nueva Hospital. Here is where the patients recover from surgery. Nurses, Physiotherapists, Translators and Students all pitch in and make a difference!Above: Jordan Stein, Mercedes, Kate Pronovost, Elly, Ninfah Garay, Heather LaFoy. And in front is the indomitable and always laughing Rachel Oates, Physiotherapist.
Heres'a great shot of Jordan learning patient assessment from graduate nurse, Melissa Martin. Adrian is one day since his hip replacement.
This is just a candid shot of Darlene Hammel and Deb Chalupa on the left as Heather LaFoy and med student Melissa Angyalfi do their morning rounds.
This is a little more poised. You can see how narrow the hall is. There is barely room to move the stretchers in and out! L to R: Deb Chalupa, Melissa and Andrea Andrachuk. Andrea is civil servant in the Attorney General's Dept. in B.C. and she's finding this experience unique!
CAMTA nurses work side by side with Tierra Nueva nurses!
This is physiotherapist Kate Pronovost's first year with CAMTA. Here she's ambulating our first patient from Monday morning. Luisa has found it difficult to ambulate because she is having a little trouble with her balance.
Notice the belt that Kate is using to ensure Luisa doesn't fall. That is Luisa's sister on the left. Nicole Beaudoin, translator and business woman from Edmonton, looks on.
Dr. Mary Hurlburt is one of the kindest and most considerate family docs I have ever met. She's been with CAMTA for three years now.
You met this little guy yesterday. Now he is recovering from his four incisions – two on each leg. Pain has been an issue but it's under control now. Mom has 4 kids and two are developmentally delayed. There is no Dad in the picture. Mom washes clothes at people's houses for a living and relies on some support from a foundation. Her oldest is a daughter, age 18, who dreams of being a respiratory therapist. But there is no money for the tuition. Isn't that heart-breaking?
Every patient has a CAMTA heart above their bed. I met one hip patient waiting for his ride at the front door of the hospital with his crutches under each arm and his red heart in his hand.
Here's Rebecca Latimer who is a nurse from Victoria with Lydia. Lydia is one day post-hip surgery.
Do you know where the Tierra Nueva hospital is? Go to Google Earth and do a search. There's a picture of the front of the hospital when you zoom in close on Quito Sur, Ecuador. Use the search term “Tierra Nueva Hospital” on Google Earth or Images.Tomorrow, I'll report from Cuenca in the south of Ecuador. Dr. Luis Piedrahita, myself and our President, Dr. Marc Moreau are visiting the hospital that has a SIGN nail that we gave them last year. Thanks to you, the donor, this SIGN nail means that patients with fractured long bones can have state of the art treatment without fluoroscopy in the operating room.Thanks.John
