Tuesday’s adult bilateral surgery is underway!

The surgery team is ready to get down to business. Fifty-five-year old Elvia Maria has been prepped for bilateral hip surgery. She is a survivor of childhood polio, and has an unrepaired club foot.

Orthopedic surgeons Dr. Tim Kostamo and Dr. Danielle Stachiw are in the centre, with adult Anesthetist Ricardo Bittencourt in the back. Adult OR Tech Krystan Publow is preparing the bone cement.

Before her surgery today, Elvia Maria had to use crutches to get around and couldn’t leave her house without having someone with her. Her daughter, Veronica, says the “new hips” will provide her mother with the opportunity to get a job and earn money for herself. They are grateful to CAMTA for providing this life-changing surgery. To the team’s amazement, Elvia Maria walked down the hall about 25 meters and then up and down the stairs, and down the hall again – mere hours after her surgery! She tells us this is the farthest she’s been able to walk in fifteen years.
