Diego

Diego in Pre-Op with his mother

Several of the pediatric patients seen on this year's mission have Cerebral Palsy; often as a result of premature birth. One of these patients is Diego, who you might remember as the smiling boy from our clinic day!

Diego was one of the first surgeries done by the pediatric team. His surgery involved a soft tissue release of the adductors, hamstrings and psoas muscles. A common misconception is that orthopedic surgery only involves operating on bones, when in fact soft tissue release is another type of orthopedic surgery that can have a massive impact on patients' Quality of Life. For children like Diego with Cerebral Palsy – a congenital condition that affects movement, muscle tone and posture – spasticity of the muscles before his surgery significantly limited his range of motion and ability to participate in activities of daily living.
