Resilience and Recovery
Our team of Adult and Pediatric Ward Nurses, Family Physicians and Physiotherapists
What happens to our patients when they get out of surgery?
After careful monitoring and care in the recovery room, every patient is taken up to CAMTA's ward on the third floor. Here, they are cared for by two general practitioners – Marni Wesner and Ryan Wright – and our awesome team of pediatric and adult ward nurses.
Rachel Oates (Physiotherapist) leads a rehabilitation class
Our Physio Team – Kristen Redhead, Rachel Oates and Joanne Montgomery – demonstrate what not to do after a hip replacement: cross your legs, bend more than 90 degrees at the hip, and twist!
Each patient is also seen by our Physiotherapy team, who facilitate early mobilization of the patients and get them walking down the hallway and up a set of stairs with assistive devices. The Physios also teach patients strengthening exercises to help with the recovery of strength and function, and teach classes on getting back to daily living following surgery. This includes everything from helpful devices for putting shoes and socks on to advice for returning to sexual activity following hip surgery. The patients and their family members have a lot of fun in these classes, and are always super excited to head home with these new tips.
Our team this week was constantly astounded by the resilience and motivation of our patients. Despite post-operative pain and fatigue, all of our patients committed fully to their rehabilitation and were quick to make use of the surgeries they'd received this week. It's this attitude of excitement and determination that makes the whole mission so fulfilling for everyone involved.

Finally, nothing at all would happen at CAMTA without our crucial team of translators. From pre-op to the OR to recovery and the ward, a translator is with every patient through the whole journey, facilitating communication and providing comfort and a sense of connection to the team. We'd be totally lost without them!
