The day after surgery some lucky patients go home

Segundo Nazate lives in northern Ecuador in the tiny Province of Carchi on the border of Columbia.  Segundo travelled approximately 5 hours by car to see the doctors in the CAMTA clinic.  His main goal was to increase his mobility and decrease his pain so that he could go back to his construction job.  At 70, Segundo does not have a pension or retirement savings; he is hopeful that his new hip will give him a new start and a better future.

Segundo Nazate was the first of the week 2 patients to conquer the stairs test.

The CAMTA physiotherapy team teaches each patient how to climb and descend stairs with crutches.  Most patients have to ascend stairs to get back into their homes and so cannot be discharged until they can do so safely.  Segundo has to climb 35 stairs to get into his home!
Maria Garcia (left) and Fanny Mayorga (right) were also discharged today.
Maria Garcia will have to be proficient at using her crutches before the CAMTA team discharges her.  Here she is practicing in the hallway under the watchful eyes of (left to right), Justine Ferguson (Physiotherapist Aide), Barb Furler (Physiotherapist) and Martha Valencia (Translator).
