Carlos had both hips replaced during one operation
Carlos is a 42-year-old salesman from south Quito. His profession involves a great deal of walking, and unfortunately, he has not been able to work for the past year due to his debilitating hip pain. When he went to a public hospital seeking treatment, he was told it was a 3 year wait and would likely cost $20,000 US. Two of his aunts had surgery with CAMTA 15 years ago, one of whom went on to climb Cotopaxi – she calls herself The Bionic Woman. His aunts suggested he go to the CAMTA clinic, and now Carlos is the proud owner of two brand new hips. When he stood up and walked the same day as his procedure, his worried nurses told him to take it easy because he isn't Superman. He said, “I know… I am Ironman” pointing to his hips. Carlos told us he plans to learn English over the next year so he can volunteer with CAMTA and give back in any way he can.
