CAMTA team members share knowledge with local nursing staff
Erica Nelson (Adult Ward Nurse) with from Jay Valencia (Translator) presented a short tutorial on the latest Canadian best practices with regards to Modern Fasting Guidelines. Erica explained how the approach to pre-operative meal restrictions has changed over the past few years. Current research shows that clear liquids and foods high in carbohydrates can be consumed much closer to surgery times than previously thought. Clear carbohydrate rich liquids can help keep patients hydrated pre-operatively to help with a speedy recovery and give them a boost of energy post-operatively to help with a speedy recovery.

Barb Furler (Physiotherapist) and Jay then presented information on best practice guidelines for post operative care of patients who have undergone knee and hip replacements. This included topics such as the correct way to teach patients to get in and out of beds and how to safely navigate the stair with crutches. Approximately 24 local nursing staff attended the two seminars.
