Week One – Thursday's blog
Aline Young (Administration) displays the donated instruments |
Dr. Lutz Marburg was a G.P. in the Kalahari Desert and Zululand in South Africa. Dr. Marburg came to Alberta with his family in 1978. He was in private practice in Grimshaw and later in Edmonton until he retired at the age of 82 in 2013. Dr. Marburg passed away in 2014.
The instruments that Aline is holding were given to CAMTA by his daughter Erna to be used by the CAMTA team.
CAMTA is very grateful for this gift.

Maria had her left hip replaced by local doctors in 2012. She came to the CAMTA team hoping that CAMTA surgeons could replace her right hip. Maria is 84 years old but you would never have guessed it by her vibrant and energetic personality. Married at only 15 years old, Maria and her husband had 7 children which led to her 20 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Maria is very motivated to recover quickly so that she can dance at her upcoming great grandchild's Baptism. Maria entertained the CAMTA team by carefully showing off some of her dance moves.
Nellie is a social worker who works at the Hospital Padre Carollo. She is an integral part of CAMTA's efficiency and is greatly appreciated by the CAMTA team. Nellie is the person whoensures CAMTA applicants go through the pre-screening prior to the CAMTA. She ensures that potential patients have x-rays taken and sent to the CAMTA surgeons in Edmonton. The CAMTA surgeons are then able to pre-select patients and plan ahead to have the necessary supplies and prostheses to do the surgeries. Nellie also ensures that patients chosen for surgery fast the night before surgery and arrive at the hospital for their surgery at the appropriate time.

Maycol is a 14 year old boy whose foot was drastically rotated inward. CAMTA surgeons cut the bone just above his ankle, straightened his foot and secured it with a plate so that it would stay straight. Maycol does not live in Quito; his home town is a 4 hour bus ride away. Maycol's Ward Nurse Norah McNaughten is extremely proud of how brave he was during his time at the hospital; Maycol never complained. Maycol is looking forward to playing soccer with his friends as it is his favourite sport.
