Getting Lots of Attention

Genesis and her Mom Erica Mina arrived at the hospital by bus the night before surgery. She was happy to hang out with the CAMTA team while waiting for her surgery that was scheduled for mid-morning. Erica and her husband (who are both unemployed) were grateful to the CAMTA team for providing the much needed surgery for their daughter. A local social worker assesses each family for their ability to pay for the hospital costs. Beyond that each family must pay the Red Cross for the required blood for the surgery and the process of cross matching. CAMTA partially reimburses each family for the blood they purchased.

Five-year-old Genesis' surgery was one of the more complex pediatric surgeries this week. The surgical team shortened her right femur and inserted a plate and screws. Next they reshaped her hip capsule to enable the femur to fit into the hip properly. The procedure took over four hours and will make a significant difference in her quality of life.

Stifany was Content until she Woke

Stifany was fast asleep on her Mom's back when she arrived in pre-op this morning. Local orthopedic surgeon Dr. Ordonez referred the one year old to CAMTA for surgery on her left hip.  Stifany's Mom, Maria Olga Sangucho, travelled with Stifany to Quito from a neighbouring town for her to have her surgery.

The Britany and Mateo Story

Britany was immediately charmed by Matthew Moreau (Mateo) on clinic day. And why wouldn't she be? He's great with kids and entertained her periodically through the long day. But as part of team one, Matthew returned to Canada. Britany was devastated. She called for him in pre-op and despaired that he was not there for her when she returned to the ward after her surgery. Britany's surprize for today was a photo and message from her Mateo. Happy girl now!
