Monica's Story pt. 2

A lovely 14-year old teenage girl, Monica, came in for her second surgery yesterday for her right clubfoot. Click here to read Monica's story (pt. 1).

Monica is getting ready for surgery in pre-op with the help of Pediatric Anesthesiologist Dr. Natalie Buu, Translator Francisco Gallardo, and Pediatric Recovery Room Nurse Bev Runka.

Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Megan Cashin, Translator Francisco Gallardo, and Pediatric Operating Room Nurse Donna Brown review Monica's files prior to sending her into surgery.

Operating Room Technicians Saison Demitor and Angela Rogers, along with Pediatric OR Nurse Donna Brown prepare surgical instruments and ready the sterile saline (salt water) for cleaning supplies during the operation.

Monica is put under general anesthesia prior to the procedure.

Pediatric Anesthesiologist Dr. Natalie Buu inserts a nerve block into Monica's right leg. The nerve block acts to numb the back of the leg and the foot. It will supplement pain control post-surgery for Monica.

Dr. Marc Moreau, Dr. Saifee Rashiq, and Dr. Megan Cashin review the procedure on Monica's right foot prior to undergoing her surgery.

Following the 4-hour long surgery, Monica is recovering in the ward this morning and is looking forward to being mobile again. She's looking very cheerful in her modified wheelchair that ensures her legs remain elevated post-surgery. In between Monica are her General Practitioner Dr. Gayle Hiebert and Pediatric Ward Nurse Dianne Cortez.

Monica has one more surgery tomorrow to finish the process with CAMTA.
