Jenny dreams of walking pain free
Meet Jenny, a lovely 41 year-old woman from Quito who has been suffering from pain for 12 years with her hips. She heard a radio campaign that mentioned the hospital foundation associated with CAMTA, which was able to help people with this condition. She was excited to hear that she qualified and was chosen as one of the few candidates who were able to undergo surgery.
Jenny is a homemaker with one beautiful daughter, Alejandra who was with her every step of the way. Jenny also helps her mother run a grocery store that sells fruit, vegetables, and beer.
While in pre-op, Translator Francisco Gallardo helped Jenny get settled in and assisted anywhere he could. He also wheeled a very happy Jenny to the Operating Room early yesterday morning on February 26, 2013.
In the Operating Room (OR), Adult OR Nurse Shelley McEachern poses with a cobalt chromium alloy (stainless steel) socket that will fit into a plastic cup, making a nice snug fit that will become her new hip joint.
The process that would normally take one and a half hours to two hours only took Adult Orthopedic Surgeons Dr. Paul Moreau and Dr. Rejean Cloutier (in the background of photo) half an hour to complete.
Adult Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Rejean Cloutier and Adult Anesthesiologist Dr. Tom O'Leary were able to sneak away for quick photo in the OR.
After a successful surgery, Jenny is resting in the Recovery Room and chatting with Translator Sammy Ruiz. This morning, Jenny is doing extremely well in the Ward. In fact, Physiotherapist Brenda Corie proudly admits that Jenny is her ideal patient. While Brenda started doing leg exercises with Jenny in bed, tears pooled in her eyes and Jenny said that they were tears of joy because she has not been able to move her legs that far apart in a long time. It was certainly a powerfully moving moment for everyone involved.
Jenny stands upright and begins walking around the ward, an amazing feat only one day after her surgery. Physiotherapists Kristen Redhead and Brenda Corie coach Jenny through the process.
And finally, Jenny walks all on her own! With a few more physio exercises, Jenny is fit to be released tomorrow and return home.
