Speaking with Ricky and Rayanne

Ricky is the proud father of 8 1/2 month-old daughter Ariana. Despite being a relatively new dad, he came to Quito for his second time because he feels it is such a worthy endeavour, helping to give people back the ability to walk and support their families, or giving children a new life. When Ricky helped to calm a crying patient in the OR by speaking Spanish to her, he knew CAMTA was for him.

Ricky's first solo scrub in adult OR happened this week and all went well. It can be stressful because the nurse has to prepare for each individual surgery by studying the surgical preferences of the particular doctor for that type of operation. He says he felt confident going into the situation, though, because he knew that if there was too much pressure, someone would step in to help out.

Rayanne is the OR lead on this CAMTA trip and loves every minute because she loves the work and in return, Ecuadorians appreciate what CAMTA does for them. Rayanne says, “This is why I'm a nurse. It gives me a high, I feel rejuvenated.”

Ricky and Rayanne prepare for each surgery by learning the technical preferences of each surgeon for each surgery.  As Rayanne says, “If you can learn these technicalities, you can anticipate the surgeons' move before they do it.”
