Week One – Wednesday's blog
Alexander poses for a picture with his mother and Pediatric Ward Nurse Julie Cadrin. Alexander lives in a small town eight hours away by bus near the Colombian border. Alexander lives with his single mother, his grandmother, and his two older siblings one of which is mentally disabled. Alexander like many CAMTA patients, required a blood transfusion following his surgery. One unit of blood costs $85. CAMTA covers $60 of the cost through a Blood Fund that was established by one of the CAMTA's anesthetists and his family a few years ago and the patient covers the remaining $25 balance. Had Alexander not been a successful candidate for surgery by the CAMTA team he would likely have become bed ridden at a very young age. Alexander would have then become a candidate for total hip surgery but unlikely to have ever had the ability to pay for that surgery.
Julie distracts Alexander while his mother looks after the discharge paperwork. We look forward to seeing Alexander at a CAMTA clinic again in 2016 to follow up on his progress!
Sixteen year old Wladimir recovers well from getting the plates and screws removed from each of his femurs. CAMTA members take a photo with Wladimir just before he is discharged.
