Mission 2014 – an easy day
After yesterday's long day of travel, today was an “easy day”. Many CAMTA volunteers took advantage of the opportunity to see a bit of the countryside, get to know some fellow team members, and become accustomed to the altitude. Quito is 2800 meters (9,350 feet) above sea level.
There were several optional tours offered. About 20 team members took a bus trip to the Saturday outdoor market in Otavalo, two hours away from Quito. This sprawling market dates back to pre-Incan time. The shoppers were happy to find modern bargains on scarves, tablecloths, jewelry and gifts.

After several hours in Otavalo, the shoppers continued on to the town of Cotacachi, famous for inepensive, good quality leather. Again, we were “successful”.

One more stop at a roadside flower stall, where a dozen long-stem roses could be picked up for $2. (If you bought your sweetheart roses for Valentine's day yesterday, chances are they came from Ecuador, and cost you a lot more!!)
Another group relaxed at the hot springs at Papallacta, where they enjoyed the spa resort at Las Termas de Papalacta, with eight thermal pools at temperatures up to 45 degrees, three cold pools and a river-water pool.
A third group enjoyed a morning of horseback riding at Hacienda La Alegria, high in the Andes, followed by a delicious lunch at the hacienda.
A few people organized their own tours of Quito, or just rested at the hotel and prepared for the week ahead.
Tomorrow the work begins….
