Surgical teams get to work in the Operating Rooms

The CAMTA team had an early start today by leaving the hotel at 7:00 am and 7:30 am to prepare for today's surgeries. With the assistance from CAMTA administrators, the slate was created including all necessary paperwork to get the show on the road. A slate is a schedule of the surgical procedures that will occur in one day including patient personal information and details pertaining to the surgical procedure.

Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Paul Moreau reviews a patient's x-ray prior to performing the surgery.

With great precision, Adult Anesthesiologist Dr. Tom O'Leary inserts a spinal anesthetic on 64-year old patient, Rosa Elvira, for a left hip surgery.

Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeons Dr. Marc Moreau and Dr. Megan Cashin work tirelessly on the clubfeet correction surgery for 14-year old Monica. More to come on Monica's story.

After undergoing surgical procedures, patients are transported into the Recovery Room where they receive much care from general practitioners and nurses.

The patient Rosa Elvira is in good hands with the assistance of Recovery Room Nurse Bev Runka, Medical Student Denis Joly, and Translator Alexandra Cabral.

Rosa Elvira is doing very well post-surgery as the nurses follow-up with her to see how she is doing. Left to right: Dr. Andrea Woo (General Practitioner), Translator (Alexandra Cabral), Erin Rezansoff (Adult Recovery Room Nurse), Bev Runka (Pediatric Recovery Room Nurse).

Once the surgeries are over, the job isn't finished. All used surgical supplies and equipment are sent over to be cleaned and sterilized.

All surgical supplies go through 5 rinsing stages to ensure that they are pristine and ready to go for the next surgery. CAMTA volunteers are more than up to the task as they scrub away. Volunteers Jennifer Jiang, Alyssa Chappell, Andrew Broad, and Cathy Moreau come up for air to say hi.

After the rinsing stages, surgical supplies are meticulously dried by Jenn Kitzan and Peggy Prodor.

In the far back room, Pediatric Operating Room Nurse Eileen Guilfoyle cleans the instruments required for re-aligning hips.

All in all, it was a fantastic way to start the day and it's only half over! There's much more to come…
